#203: Solaris Network Administration

Introduction:
This course teaches students advanced administration skills needed to
create, administer, and tune a local-area network (LAN) using subnetting and
routing for Solaris 2.X workstations. It is designed for experienced Solaris
2.X or UNIX System V administrators who need a structured learning
experience to optimize their network of systems. Students will learn network
configuration and remote installation procedures, advanced security, and
troubleshooting techniques, how to customize sendmail, network application
tools, and name service configuration.
Who Should Attend:
Experienced Solaris 2.X or UNIX System V administrators who have successfuly
completed:
"Solaris 2.5 Administration"
or
"Solaris 1.X to Solaris 2.X System Adminstration," plus six months jof on-the-job experience.
Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
- Discuss the TCP/IP networking model's major protocols
- Monitor network traffic
- Monitor and control the Address Resolution Protocol cache
- Set up, configure, and manage a Sun internet router with subnets
- Identify the differences between TCP and UDP
- Manage client-server transport layer communications
- Configure and maintain RPC-based applications support
- Describe common applications, system, and network bottlenecks
- Test and monitor system, disk, and network loads
- Use monitoring commands to find performance bottlenecks
- Set up and maintain a simple Domain Naming Service (DNS) environment
- Set up a Jumpstart automated network installation server
- Identify sendmail functionality and configuration
- Install a mail server
- Install UUCP between existing Solaris 2.X systems
Required Skills/Knowledge:
To succeed fully in this course, you should be able to:
- Use the OpenWindows graphical user interface
- Edit text files using vi or the OpenWindows Text Editor
- Install a Solaris 2.X server, with diskless clients, and configure and maintain the
environment
- Maintain fundamental Solaris 2.X security parameters
- Administer the Solaris 2.X NIS+ distributed database
- Administer and maintain the Solaris 2.X NFS and electronic mail environments
- Convert binary, decimal, and hexadecimal numbers
